Description
Slimline Dual Sample & Hold
Two Sample & Hold channels in 2HP – for stepped modulation, random voltages and rhythmic movement in Eurorack
The Slimline Dual Sample&Hold is an ultra-compact Eurorack utility for patches where continuous signals are turned into held voltage values, stepped modulation or random sequences. On each trigger event, the module captures the instantaneous value of the input signal and holds it at the output until the next trigger arrives.
This turns movement into structure: an LFO can become a stepped modulation source, noise is transformed into random CV values, and rhythmic triggers create controlled yet lively voltage patterns. Whether you are building experimental soundscapes, rhythmic filter movements, pitch variations or unpredictable modulation patterns, this module adds motion and chance to your patch without taking up much rack space.
Dual operation – two channels, flexible patching
The module offers two Sample & Hold channels, each with its own trigger input, signal input and output. This allows you to create two independent modulation patterns, control two voices in parallel or build related CV structures.
The normalization of the second channel is especially practical: the trigger input of channel 2 is normalized to the trigger input of channel 1, and the signal input of channel 2 is normalized to the signal input of channel 1. If no separate signal is patched into channel 2, it can automatically work with the signals from channel 1. This creates two related but separately available Sample & Hold voltages with very little patching effort.
Sample & Hold – the creative classic for controlled randomness
Sample & Hold is one of the classic tools of analogue synthesis. The principle is simple, but musically extremely versatile: an input signal is only evaluated at the moment a trigger is received. The captured voltage value then remains held at the output.
With a noise signal at the input, random voltages are created. With an LFO, smooth movement is turned into stepped modulation. With a sequence or CV source, rhythmically re-sampled variations can be generated. The result can be subtle, chaotic, melodic, percussive or fully experimental – depending on the signal source and trigger used.
Normalized inputs for fast and complex patches
The normalization between channel 1 and channel 2 makes the module particularly efficient. A single input signal and a single trigger are enough to operate both channels. At the same time, the module remains fully flexible: as soon as you patch a separate signal or trigger into channel 2, the normalization is disconnected at that point.
This lets you create two random modulation outputs from just one noise signal, use the same trigger for two different signal sources or deliberately separate the two channels. This is especially useful in small performance racks where patch economy and fast handling matter.
Compact in 2HP – ideal for small and large systems
With a width of just 2HP, the Slimline Dual Sample&Hold also fits into very compact Eurorack systems, skiff cases and dense performance racks. Despite its narrow width, the module provides two complete Sample & Hold channels and significantly expands your modulation options.
In small systems in particular, a Sample & Hold module can have a major impact: it creates new voltage patterns, rhythmic variations and random movement from sources that are already present, without requiring additional large modulation modules.
Typical applications
- Generate random CV modulation from noise sources
- Derive stepped modulation from LFOs or other continuous voltages
- Patch rhythmic filter, VCA or waveshaper movement
- Create pitch variations and random melodic fragments
- Use two related Sample & Hold outputs from a shared input signal
- Build trigger- and clock-based modulation in generative patches
- Create experimental textures, glitches and unpredictable sound movement
Small module, huge modulation potential
The Slimline Dual Sample&Hold is a compact tool for adding movement, randomness and rhythmic tension to Eurorack patches. It is suitable for classic random CV patches as well as precisely triggered modulation patterns, generative structures and experimental sound design.
With its combination of two channels, normalized inputs and space-saving 2HP format, the module quickly becomes a versatile part of any patch: easy to understand, fast to patch and musically far more powerful than its size might suggest.
